My Sweet Little Rescue Dog
83
She was just a sweet little thing, she was a mix of Poodle and Yorkshire Terrier with jet black eyes. I can still remember the day we went to pick her up at the apartment of a older couple who were breeding their dogs in a tiny city apartment . When we walked in there the smell was stifling and there were close all over the floor and more flies in there than outside . They told us that she was the runt of the litter and her mother would not feed her, they said they had been trying to feed her hotdogs but she would not eat them . That’s not surprising to me seeing that she is only eight weeks old, I think a little dog food would have been better than a hotdog . At this point I knew I had to get this dog out of this apartment, and I wish I could have taking all of the dogs out of there but just couldn’t .
On the way home I told my dad that I would give her a good bath because she did smell and she also had little scabs on her back . I have a showering attachment that goes onto the faucet that will able you to regulate the water so it won’t be to hot or cold . I was now ready to give my puppy her first bath . Has soon has the water hit her she screamed bloody murder and began shaking and fighting me, it took all I had just to give her a bath . I could not believe how strong this little dog was, after her bath she shook for hours but not from being cold but out of fear.
This is what we believe happen and the doctor that examined her after we told him what happen when trying to give her a bath, had said that something traumatized her to show that kind of fear towards water, and we think that this old couple seeing that this dog was not eating or being feed by her mother thought it would be better to kill her out right than watch her waste away slowly . We think they tried to drown her but she put up such a fight that it wore then out and they could not finish what they tried to do . We found out three month later that their apartment had been condemned by the state and all their dog were taken away from them and they were fined for keeping dogs in such a filthy apartment . I think people like that should not be allowed to own any pets.
I found that my little dog who we called Pumpkin was a bit of a daredevil , instead of climbing the three stairs on our back porch she would take a running start and jump the three steps and land on the porch, but this would one day come back to bite her. One cold winter day she tried her daredevil stunt but just has she went to jump her back legs slipped on some ice and in midair her body turned and she hit her back on the middle stair, my heart sunk has I watch her tumble down the stairs, she was able to get up on her legs but when she tried to take a step she would fall down. When we took her to the animal hospital they found a disk in her back had been injured and we had to leave her there, the doctor said he would do everything he could for her but if that did not work she would need a operation which would cost $5,000 . We did visit her a few times to see how she was doing and at the end of two week the doctor called and said we could bring our dog home now that she was better and could walk again. When we got home I let her free in the yard, she was so happy to be home that she ran around the house like a greyhound in a race, but for a very long time she would not even try to climb those stairs she would just stay at the foot of those stairs and bark when she wanted to come in the house.
She loved to play out in the yard and I had a old slightly deflated soccer ball which I would kick up in the air and she would jump up and catch in her mouth and than she would bring it back to me to do it all over again , She loved to be outside and enjoyed long walks and her favorite things to do was lay in the sun on the driveway in the summertime and play with her best friend Tanya . She was a very happy go lucky dog that enjoy her life and play time, she was a very playful, friendly and loving dog and a very faithful friend. She never got over her fear of water, she was a little calmer when I gave her baths but she still shook and cried . Two years ago on the week of her 16th birthday she peacefully past away in her sleep, my little sweet rescue dog Pumpkin had come to the end of her life.
My dog Tanya and I missed her a lot but I had no idea that my dog Tanya would really take it hard, the first three days after Pumpkin died Tanya would sit at the door crying and when I let her out she would run around the yard looking for her friend Pumpkin . The worse part though was Tanya had now stopped eating, and I could not get her to eat anything, she would just drink water and that’s it. I had to get forceful and took Tanya and sat her on a chair and feed her with a spoon, but she was not having none of that and spit it out on the floor. It took a while to just get one meal a day in her, I had to start to force feed her or I would lose her to. Little by little I was able to get Tanya to eat more and more and by the end of three months she was eating on her own . For all the people who think dogs don’t have personalities or feelings you may want to rethink that .

I am very new to Hubpages and HubMob so I hope I'm doing this right. Recently, a friend of mine almost lost her dog after he got into a pack of sugar free gum that he found. It turns out that the ingredient Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. According to her vet, the number of Xylitol poisoned dogs which he sees is still on the rise even though the dangers have been known (to some)for years. I didn't know and I am a dog owner. So, I hope this is helpful to some fellow dog owners out there. http://hubpages.com/hub/Xylitol-Sugar-F … ic-to-Dogs BTW, I don't know how to attach the HubMob graphic. Legend has it the heinous musical device, the Cat Organ or Katzenklavier, was made up of a row of captive cats with their outstretched tails pressed underneath a keyboard. Hi Kashmir.
You've written a hub that really pulls at the heart strings and the tear ducts. You gave a creature a chance of life with all the nice trimmings. Like a play mate (Tanya), nice food, exercise (long walks) and a warm bed on a cold winter night.
We once had a mix of yorksire terrier and dachle. unfortunately at 18 months got attacked by a pitt bull terrier and died shortly after of a heart attack, but thats another story. lol

Wow, what a touching story Kashmir. Animals give us so much, unconditionally and I find it so incredibly sad & depraved when I hear of people like Pumpkin's original owners. Thankfully, you found & nurtured this amazing little dog, traumatized as she was, and gave her a full and happy life. She was loved and will be missed but her memory will live on, through Tanya, you and now this Hub, which celebrates her life. Voted up-great story!
Hi Tom, You gave Pumpkin a great life and I am glad you got her out of that miserable home. I can’t understand why people who can’t take care of dogs, decide to have puppies as well! Good to hear that the other dogs got rescued as well. Dogs are personalities and when they die they leave big emptiness. I love this hub and I rate it up, awesome, beautiful and more! Thanks for writing it and give Tanya a treat from me! Tina
Oh Kash...this touched my heart so deeply. Bless you for helping pumpkin; although I am sorry to hear of her passing, you gave her such a wonderful and loving home. These darling animals are our devoted friends and they do give us unconditional love. Bless you and kudos, and up and awesome.
What a beautiful story, every dog needs a friend like you. Thanks for sharing
This is such a heartwarming story of the rescue of pumpkin. A lot of people just don't understand that pets become part of the family and when they pass on it can be just as emotional to lose them from your life.
Thanks for sharing
Sarah
Such a sad story to read Tom. She was lucky to have you while she was alive.
Kashmir, it's heart wrenching to see dogs in need and it's a pity there aren't more people like you out there saving them. Touching story!
Pumpkin was very lucky you rescued her. Your story really does tell a lot about dogs and their feelings. Pumpkin always remembered the events that made her fearful of water. She had a daring personality to jump the steps. And Tanya grieving shows how dogs can feel what we feel. This was such a sweet and sad story. I really love your stories about you and your dogs. The fact that Pumpkin lived such a long life says so much about the love you share with your dogs. Give Tanya a big hug for me!
Kashmir, what a story you put out for everyone to read. Our animals are always part of our family, I was glad to read finding out your dogs back healed and lived to be 16, any animal over 10, lives a good life. That means you did a great job. I am sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing.
Kashmir56~~ This is a touching story and I thank you for sharing... I can relate in every way.
Thanks for sharing this nice pictures that i rated beautiful.
kashmir56: Hello! What a wonderful little rescue dog you had for sixteen years! Thank you for sharing her story and pictures with us! God, don't you love animals. They are better than us in so many ways.
I’m so glad that you rescued Pumpkin. Sixteen years is a very good lifespan for a dog. It’s wonderful that you got Pumpkin as a puppy and gave her a good life. It’s also great that you had so much patience feeding Tanya until her appetite returned. Thank you for being such a great friend to animals!
Thank you for this beautiful story. 16 is a good long time for a dog. What a wonderful companion she was to you. And what joy you brought to her life. I have the greatest admiration for people who rescue dogs. Hats off to you.
What a cutie! We have 4 rescue dogs. Dog breeding should be licensed, controlled and done only by professionals in my opinion. It should not be a free for all where people have puppy mills in their homes.
Such a touching story. Thank goodness for people like you who love an care for unwanted animals. Pumpkin had a good life, thanks to you. I enjoyed reading your inspiring story. Voted up and awesome.
Seems like both you and Pumpkin were lucky! Dogs are truly man's best friend.
You really got me choked up here. I am so glad you resuced Pumpkin and gave her a new life and so much love. I have such a hard time hearing stories of how some people treat animals. So sad that Tanya wasn't eating for a while and I'm glad you pushed her. Thanks for a very powerful hub. Animals just push their way into our hearts and there's nothing we can do about it. I have two rescue dogs and they are the apple of my eye. Don't know what I'd do without them.
Hi Kashmir56,
Ahhh this put a lump in my throat! Well done for taking pumpkin in and giving her a better life, the world needs people that care and glad Tanya has returned to eating now.
We took in a lost dog last week which we could tell had come from a good loving home. We made up some posters and found her owners by the next day, she was such a lovely dog that even after just one night we was sorry to see her go but really happy that she had her family back.xxx
Hi kashmir, it looked like you joined the hubchallenge, kudos and good for you, looks like it's improving your overall hub experience.
I'm sorry I haven't been around. :(
Very sweet article. loved it. ttys Rose
aww. thank God you found her!!! Now she is vibrant and in great hands. I can tell you there are so many animals out there in need of someone to really love them. I wish I could take one in now, but being that we are having a difficult time, I wouldn't even dream of it now. I had wanted to get a puppy because I have obtained a fulltime job and being trained as assistant manager which would give me a decent salary, but my husband just started his business so I have to wait until we are more steady. People who abuse there animals even though it may be not intended should be able to realize that the animal is better off with out them if they cant care properly for them. I'm glad you got her when you did, at least she lived the rest of her days in love and peace.
What a lovely treasure. Who couldn't miss Pumpkin. I so want to hold her now after reading this great tribute for her. You have a good heart Kash. Is Tanya your avatar?
Kashmir, this was beautiful. You really did give this dog a good life, and it sounds like she gave you lots of love back.
I wanted to let you know that I featured one of your other dog hubs on my hub, "Hubs That Moved Me." Thanks!
Oh MY GOSH, Kashmir! I felt so sad reading about Pumpkins fear of water... and then again when I realized she had passed away. I am so sorry.. but I know you made a difference in this little one's life and her in yours. I think it's awesome you have dedicated a hub to her memory. Thank you for sharing with us about Pumpkin... and God Bless YOU!
We grow to love our pets so much that it is so very sad when they do go. On the other hand, their love and companionship makes it more than worth the heartache.
Beautiful story...
I wish I could grab you and hug you. That was one sweet dog and you gave her such a long life. Take care. Aren't dogs great?
That little dog was so lucky to have a caring person like you take her in. I love to hear stories like this one. What a sad beginning for this little pup.
You are awesome! :)
Hi Kashmir56
This is a very beautiful story. Thank you for sharing. Pumpkin was very blessed to have such a family, and I know that she appreciates this as you continue to honor her in your heart.
Kash, so sorry for your loss. I know from experience that other animals can react to the death of an animal aquiantance. It is truly remarkable that we can bond the way we do with animals, especially dogs. They do understand us. They pick us up when we are down. They are there when we need them like they know exactly what we are thinking. Great story.
Thanks for your hub and tribute to Pumpkin. What a sad story. Animals definitely have emotions and respond well to love and kindness. I wish more people would rehome rescue pets as they are so rewarding and wonderful companions.
What a wonderful story, and great to hear that Pumpkin got to be an old dog before dying. It's still heartbreaking. You gave her a happy life.
I'm happy to hear the other dogs were taken away from that couple.
Aawww...this is soo touching!!
Kashmir-
As an owner of a rescue dog I can sympathize with you about the need to remove the dog from the home. I also recently lost a another dog, the older companion and only other dog my rescue got along with. For several weeks he mourned the loss of his only friend. Seven months later he still isn't fully recovered but our long walks and extra time together is helping him cope. For eight years they were best friends and when her time came the worst part was coming home without her. Just heartbreaking.
Anyway we need more people like you that can sympathize with an animal in need and can recognize that animals have emotions and feelings just like humans do. We are after all animals ourselves.
Love dogs! Love rescuing them. Currently have a 12 yr old chow chow I rescued from the humane society when she was a pup. Voted up!
Thanks for saying so. I'm not a fan of kids, I can do without them and I won't be having any, but if I see a dog in distress, I will stop the world to help it!
ya, and they long to please you: and it's okay to have sex with your spouse in front of them ;-)
What a great story!
Nice to meet a fellow non human parent :-)
they obey better and you don't have to pay for college or weddings
Hi! kashmir56 I am crying.....beautiful story Angie
Very touching story, pumpkin is ADORABLE :) thanks for sharing kashmir56
Tom, I voted this awesome and beautiful. I have a rescued greyhound that I have had for 10 years now. She will be celebrating her 12th birthday in May. Couldn't ask for a better pal.
Rescued pets make the best friends! I'm sorry that you lost Pumpkin - losing an animal buddy is so hard.
I agree that dogs (and all animals, really) have personalities, thoughts and feelings. I'll never understand how some people can think that they don't.

Although I am a cat liker, I liked this story. Animals do understand our emotions and they too have their own way of showing emotions. I had a cat that was "kinda" emotional ... but that's a long story.
I am sorry to hear about Pumpkin's departure.
I also have reason to believe that cats and dogs understand much more than we think they do.
Cheers, Tom!
